JAPANESE FARM OPERATORS IN ARIZONA, CALIFORNIA, OREGON AND WASHINGTON, BY MINOR CIVIL DIVISIONS

According to the Census of 1940 there were

6,170 Japanese farm operators in the four states

of Arizona, California, Oregon and Washington. A

"farm operator" according to the Census defini-

tion, is a person who operates a farm, either by

performing the labor himself or directly super-

Vising it.

A "farm" for Census purposes, is all the land

which is directly farmed by one person, either

by his own labor alone or with the assistance of

members of his household or hired employees. A

"farm" may consist of a single tract of land or

a number of separate tracts, and these tracts may

be held under different tenures. When a land

owner has ome or more tenants, renters, or mana--

gers, the land operated by each is considered a

farm. The Census does not report as a "farm" any

tract of land of less than 3 acres, wless its

agricultural products in 1939 were valued at $250

or more.

It will be seen from the foregoing definitions

of "farm operator" and "farm", as used by the

Census, that the number of farm operators report-

ed will be the same as the number of farms.

The accompanying five Tables show how the

6,170 Japanese farm operators in Arizona, Calif-

ornia, Oregon and Washington were distributed a-

mong these four states and in the minor civil

divisions thereof.

California had by far the preponderant num-

ber, 5,135, or 83.2 percent of the total in the

JAPANESE FARM OPERATORS IN ARIZONA,

four states. Arizona had 52 Japanese farm oper-

ators, or only . of one percent of the total in

the State, all of whom were in Maricopa County.

Of the 5,135 Japanese farm operators in Cal-

ifornia, Los Angeles County had 1,523, or 29.7

percent of the State's total. The next heaviest

concentration was found in Sacramento County,

where there were 416,or 8.1 percent of the total

in California.

The Japanese farm operators in Oregon were

found to be most heavily centered in Multnomah

and Hood River Counties. Of the State's total of

277, there were 91, or 32.9 percent of all those

in the State, in Multnomah County; and in Hood

County there were 68 operators, or 24.5 percent

of the total in the State.

The heaviest concentration of the 706 Japan-

ese farm operators in Washington was found by

the Census to be in King County, where 407 of

them, or 57.6 percent of the total in the State,

were located. King County had the next largest

group with lll operators, or 15.7 percent of the

total for the State. Outside of these two Coun-

ties, no other county had more than 7 percent of

the State total.
