Cites Big Expense
WASHINGTON, Jan. 1-(WU.P)-
Representative Stephen M. Young,
|Democrat of Ohio, Tuesday de-
| nounced the "`striped-pants boys at
| the State department" who arrang-
ed for the detention of Japanese
and German diplomats at ritzy re-
sort hotels in the mountains. of West
Virginia and Virginia.
About 200 Germans and Hungari-
ans have been quartered at the lux-
urious Greenbrier hotel at White
Sulphur Springs, W. Va., and some
90 Japanese were sent to the Home-
stead hotel at Hot Springs, Va.,
Recalling that among the Japa-
nese were the two envoys who were |
negotiating with this government |
at the time of the Pearl harbor at-tack, Young protested keeping
them "at great expense to the |
American taxpayer at one of the!
finest resort hotels in the country." |
He said the government should
give them safe-conduct to their na-
| tive country and treat them proper- |
| ly but that "it's time we Americans |
are getting hard."
Young also condemned as "re-
volting" the release by authorities |
in Hawaii of a picture showing |
United States troops standing at at-
tention at the burial of a Japanese |
airman killed in the "sneak" attack |
on Pearl harbor.
