Dear Mr, Kelley:
As you know Fred Links of the Department of Finance has been active in
preparing and bill for the Legislature to standardize the Bear on the Bear Flag
through the kindness of Dr. Storer and yourself, Links has accepted the sug-
gestion of standardizing the Flag as well as the Bear,
The Flag standardization we are working on here: the sizes of the flags,
size and position of the star, width of the red stripe, position and size of
your Bear, the height and position of the letters; the colors, by the Am. Col-
or cards: red is Old Glory, jet bleck, green for the grass plot without a
black edging, the brown and dark brown of the Bear to be determined by you and
Dr. Storer.
Have you any suggestions as to the Flag standardization?
To meet Dr. Storer's proposal for the Grizzly Bear as the State animal,
he suggested that I write you practically the same letter I wrote him on March
30 for the Bear Standardization as to colors. Enclosed is 2 positive photo-
stat of the Bear you drew for the Flag,
Can you use it as a basis for your drawing of the Standard Bear to conform with
that of the Flag?
Give it the proper brown, and the dark brown for (a) the Bear i ae (6) the
shading, (c) the fur r undulations, (a) the paws, and, perhaps, (e) the iris? "
Should the 12 grass tufts in inn grass plot be dark brown or "plackt
The grass plot should be all green without a black edging?
Colors: Hed for the tongue to be Old Glory red or the red of the National Flag.
Green to be that of the enclosed sample which McLorg, of the Emerson Flag Co.,
says is the best green for flag PerRony = Brown and dark brown to be deter-
mined Gyr you gad Dr. totorer? pew. pho ac. ance eee patel.
On a separate sheet of paper, `of - and dark brown (each/about an inch
square) to be used in checking with the Color Cards.
Since the Legislature is in session can the picture be available within a week
or 10 days?
When you and Dr. Storer agree upon the picture and its colors please forward
to me for delivery to Links for his bill.
By phone last night Dr. Storer stated he will end) his class work at
Davis this week and hopes to be in San Francisco early next week for a confer-
ence with you. !
Sincerely
ye i ~ jeox CEC CO MN `
